Why shoulder-season wins

May and late September are Europe's best-kept open secrets. Weather is mild (60–75°F across most regions), crowds are 40–60% lighter than peak July/August, and hotel rates drop anywhere from 25–40%. Restaurants run full service, attractions stay open, and you can actually book a 7 PM dinner in Rome without plotting three weeks out.

Italy: beyond Florence and Venice

  • Bologna + a day-trip to Modena — best food city in Italy, far fewer tourists
  • Trieste + the Friuli wine region — Habsburg-era charm, oyster country
  • Matera and Puglia — white-washed villages, trulli houses, coastal drives
  • Lake Iseo (not Como) — a slower Italian lake without the crowds

Portugal: skip Lisbon in May, visit in September

Lisbon in May is perfect but crowded. In late September, the Atlantic is still warm enough to swim, the evenings have just a hint of autumn, and hotel prices drop almost in half. Pair with 2–3 nights in the Alentejo wine country or Comporta's quiet beaches.

Slovenia & Croatia: the Adriatic without the chaos

  • Bled, then Bohinj — the quieter alpine lake of the two
  • Ljubljana — walkable, bike-friendly, one of Europe's cleanest capitals
  • Istria (Croatia) — Rovinj and Motovun, truffle country, coastal villages
  • Split and Hvar work in shoulder season; in peak season they're overrun

Booking sweet spots

For May travel — book by late February for best flight/hotel combos. Late September — book by mid-July. Our desk can hold multiple options for 48 hours while you decide, which is often critical in shoulder season when the best boutique hotels (under 20 rooms) sell out quickly for specific weeks.
