The philosophy: pack for three days

The single shift that makes two-week carry-on travel possible: pack for three days, do laundry on day 3, 7, and 11. Any hotel will launder a small bag for $15–25. Most Airbnbs include washers. You save 8–10 pounds and fit comfortably in a carry-on.

The full packing list (two weeks, carry-on only)

  • 3 × t-shirts (1 merino wool) — rolled
  • 1 × long-sleeve button-down — for dinners, museums, layering
  • 2 × trousers (1 dark, 1 lighter)
  • 1 × shorts or light trouser (season-appropriate)
  • 4 × underwear + 4 × socks (merino blend, quick-dry)
  • 1 × warm layer (merino sweater or packable down) — for evenings
  • 1 × rain shell (lightweight, packs to size of paperback)
  • 1 × pair walking shoes that works for dinner too (e.g. dark leather sneakers)
  • 1 × swimsuit (always — even on non-beach trips)
  • Toiletries in 100ml containers — decanted from home
  • Electronics: laptop/iPad, 1 × universal plug adapter, 1 × USB-C cable, charger
  • Documents: passport, backup copies on phone, one physical printout

The one cable everyone forgets

A 3-foot USB-C to USB-C cable. Most hotel room ports are USB-A or the cable is shorter than reach-from-bed distance. A single 3-foot USB-C cable handles phone charging from your laptop, hotel ports, or battery bank — and it replaces four separate cables.

Laundry rhythm

  • Day 3 — hotel laundry or quick hand-wash in sink
  • Day 7 — full load at a local laundromat or via hotel service
  • Day 11 — hand-wash essentials, save packable items for final days
  • Bring 3–4 dryer sheets and a small microfiber towel for hand-wash drying

What you can leave behind (you really can)

  • Heavy guidebooks — use Google Maps offline + Wikivoyage
  • Multiple pairs of shoes — one versatile pair handles almost anything
  • Full-size toiletries — decant everything, buy more if you need to
  • Travel-specific clothing lines — your normal wardrobe works fine
  • Electronics you won't use daily — no Kindle if you don't read in bed
